Consolidating Cameras and Lights Under One Router: A Comprehensive Guide

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience consolidating multiple devices under a single router. I’ve been using three different routers with various SSIDs for my seven cameras and six light bulbs, which was becoming quite cumbersome. Yesterday, I upgraded to a new, powerful router and decided it was time to streamline everything.

Initially, I faced the challenge of changing the Wi-Fi network for all devices without resetting each one individually. After some research and trial and error, I found a solution that worked seamlessly. I adjusted the SSID settings on my new router to match the existing networks my devices were connected to. This allowed me to gradually transition each device onto the new network without any disruption.

For the cameras, I discovered that most modern models support dual SSID configurations, which meant I could add the new network to their settings without losing the existing connection. Once all cameras were on the new network, I simply removed the old SSIDs from their configurations. This approach saved me from having to physically access each camera, which would have been a tedious task.

With the light bulbs, the process was even smoother. Since they’re designed for easy network switching, I just needed to ensure the new router’s SSID was broadcasted properly. Using the manufacturer’s app, I was able to reconfigure each bulb’s network settings in a matter of minutes.

This consolidation has not only simplified my setup but also improved performance. The new router’s enhanced signal strength ensures that all devices remain connected without any dropouts. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’m excited to see how this streamlined setup will enhance my smart home functionality.
