I’ve been on a mission to create the most reliable home security system possible, and I’m thrilled to share my journey and findings with you! ![]()
The Challenge:
Most security systems I’ve encountered are plagued by false positives. Whether it’s a spider practicing its bungee skills in front of a camera or a cat knocking over a PIR sensor, these false alarms can be incredibly frustrating. I wanted a system that could distinguish between real threats and harmless triggers.
The Solution:
After extensive research and experimentation, I’ve developed a system that significantly reduces false positives. Here’s a glimpse into how it works:
-
Camera Configuration:
I use a mix of Dahua and Wyze cameras, configured to optimize video streams. The settings vary based on camera models, but I’ve found H265 and H264 codecs to be effective for balancing quality and bandwidth. -
Blue Iris Integration:
Blue Iris has been a game-changer for me. It’s a powerful camera management system that integrates seamlessly with Home Assistant. The key was fine-tuning its parameters to suit my specific setup. -
PIR Sensors:
I opted for Z-Wave PIR sensors from NEO Coolcam. Adjusting their sensitivity and re-trigger settings has made a huge difference. For instance, setting the motion sensitivity to 60 and the re-trigger delay to 8 seconds helps avoid multiple alerts for the same event. -
AI Sentry for Further Filtering:
Adding AI Sentry to the mix has taken my system to the next level. It helps filter out false positives by analyzing video feeds and distinguishing between humans, pets, and other objects. -
Home Assistant Automation:
The real magic happens in Home Assistant. I’ve set up automations that trigger only when multiple sensors detect motion within a short timeframe. This ensures that a single false trigger doesn’t set off the alarm unnecessarily.
Why This Matters:
Security is one of the most critical aspects of a smart home. A system that’s too sensitive can lead to complacency, while one that’s too lenient leaves you vulnerable. Striking the right balance is essential, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come in achieving that.
Tips for Others:
- Experiment with different camera placements and angles to minimize false triggers.
- Consider adding car parking radar detectors as an additional layer of detection. They’re cheap and easy to integrate.
- If you’re using a smart speaker, a credible dog barking sound can be a strong deterrent.
I’d love to hear about your experiences and any tips you’ve picked up along the way! Let’s continue to innovate and improve our home security systems together! ![]()
