Hi everyone! I wanted to share a fun and heartfelt project I recently worked on for my friend’s birthday. It was a blast to put it all together, and I thought it might inspire others to get creative with their smart home setups!
This year, I decided to elevate our annual game night tradition by turning it into a surprise birthday celebration. My friend, who’s a huge fan of classic Nintendo games, absolutely loves anything related to Mario and Zelda. Six years ago, I surprised him with a custom-themed birthday cake, and this year, I wanted to do something even more special.
I decided to use my Govee curtain lights to create a dynamic and interactive birthday scene. The idea was to project a custom-designed Mario-themed display onto the curtains, complete with his name and a festive message. I spent hours tweaking the design to make sure it was just right, and I must say, the result turned out amazing!
Here’s how I pulled it off:

Planning the Design: I sketched out a simple yet vibrant Mario-themed design, focusing on iconic elements like the Mushroom Kingdom and a celebratory banner. I made sure to include his name to make it extra personal.

Setting Up the Curtain Lights: I connected the Govee curtain lights to my smart home system and used the Govee app to upload my custom design. The app made it easy to adjust colors and timing to match the mood of the celebration.

Timing the Surprise: Since his birthday fell on a weekend, I synchronized the lights to activate during our game night. The moment the room dimmed and the curtain lights lit up with his name and the Mario theme, his face lit up with pure joy—it was absolutely worth all the effort!

Adding the Finishing Touches: To complement the lights, I prepared a custom-made giant cookie decorated to look like the first Mario 1-Up mushroom cake we made six years ago. It was a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern tech!
Reflecting on the evening, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for how technology allows us to create such meaningful moments. The Govee curtain lights were a game-changer, making the surprise both visually stunning and incredibly easy to set up.
