I recently stumbled upon an exciting project that combines my love for Star Trek with my interest in smart home automation. Inspired by the iconic ‘Red Alert’ from the Starship Enterprise, I decided to create a similar system using my Alexa device. Here’s how I did it and what I learned along the way!
First, I discovered that there’s a skill called ‘Red Alert’ available for Alexa. It plays sound effects reminiscent of the Star Trek universe, which immediately got me excited. I wanted to take it a step further by integrating it with my RGB lighting system. The goal was to have the lights turn red when I activated the Red Alert and dim up and down, just like on the Enterprise.
I started by setting up a routine in the Alexa app. The routine triggers the ‘Red Alert’ skill to play the sound effects and changes the color of my RGB strips to red. It was a straightforward process, and I was thrilled to see it work on my first try!
However, I wanted to add a bit more sophistication. I decided to make the RGB strips not just turn red, but also dim up and down to create that pulsating effect. After some research, I found that I could achieve this by using a combination of scenes and timers in my smart home setup. I programmed the lights to gradually increase and decrease in brightness, syncing perfectly with the sound effects. It took a bit of trial and error, but the result was worth it!
Another feature I wanted to add was turning off the lights automatically when the sound effects stopped. This required a bit of automation magic. I used a combination of Alexa routines and smart app triggers to detect when the sound had finished playing and then deactivate the lights. It wasn’t the most intuitive process, but with some persistence, I got it working seamlessly!
Reflecting on this project, I realize how powerful smart home automation can be when it comes to personalizing your space. What started as a fun idea has turned into a fully functional, immersive experience that brings a bit of Star Trek into my home. It’s a great reminder that even the most unconventional ideas can become reality with the right tools and a bit of creativity.
