Hey ,
Wanted to share a few fun and kinda unexpected ways I’ve been using my Aqara motion sensors that go beyond the regular “lights on when you walk in” stuff. I’m a bit of a smart home enthusiast (okay, maybe borderline obsessed lol), and these little guys have really opened up some cool automations.
-
Cat Cam Trigger – I stuck one near my cat’s favorite nap spot. When motion is detected, it triggers my Aqara camera for a short clip. Helps me check if she’s up to something or just plotting my demise again.
-
Mailbox Alert – I mounted one inside the mailbox (it’s sheltered and dry) and it pings me when the mail gets delivered. Works surprisingly well with a bit of tweaking on sensitivity and delay.
-
Fridge Door Timer – I placed one inside our fridge (not kidding). If the door stays open for more than X seconds, it reminds us with a HomePod chime. Saved us from a soupy ice cream disaster once.
-
Workout Motivation – Got one in the garage. If motion is detected between 6–8am, it fires off my “Workout” HomeKit scene — music, lights, fan. Little push to get moving.
-
Toddler Patrol – Sensor at the bottom of the stairs. Sends me a ping if my kiddo tries sneaking upstairs when she’s supposed to be in bed. Game changer.
Anyone else doing weird or clever things with these sensors? Would love to steal—I mean—learn from your ideas.
