Custom Automation with Stages: A Smooth Solution

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with setting up a custom automation using the Lighting Automation SmartApp. I’ve been working on creating a seamless lighting experience in my bathroom, and I thought I’d document my journey in case anyone else is tackling a similar project.

The Goal:
I wanted my bathroom lights to turn on gradually when the motion detector is triggered. The idea was to have the GE Z-Wave Switches (12722) dim in first, followed by the Hue bulbs adjusting to a comfortable 10% brightness. The challenge was ensuring everything worked smoothly without any hiccups.

The Setup:
I started by setting up the motion detector and linking it to the SmartApp. The initial setup was pretty straightforward, but I quickly realized that triggering both the switches and the bulbs simultaneously wasn’t ideal. The Hue bulbs weren’t responding as expected because they weren’t already on.

The Solution:
After some research, I discovered that the Lighting Automation SmartApp allows for a two-stage automation. Here’s how I configured it:

  1. Stage 1 - Dimmers First:

    • Trigger: Motion detected in the bathroom.
    • Action: Turn on the GE Z-Wave Switches to 25% brightness with a 0.25-second delay.
  2. Stage 2 - Hue Bulbs Follow:

    • Trigger: Same motion detection.
    • Action: Adjust the Hue bulbs to 10% brightness with a slight delay after the dimmers.

The Outcome:
It works like a charm! The lights now transition smoothly, creating a welcoming ambiance without any abrupt changes. Plus, the automation turns everything off after two minutes of inactivity, which is perfect for energy efficiency.

Tips for Others:

  • Timing is Key: Experiment with different delays to find the right balance between smooth transitions and immediate response.
  • Test Thoroughly: Make sure to test each stage separately before combining them to ensure everything works as intended.
  • Documentation: Keep notes on your configurations so you can tweak them easily in the future.

I’m really happy with how this turned out. It’s a small but significant improvement that makes daily life a bit more comfortable. If anyone has questions or wants to share their own automation setups, I’d love to hear about them!

Cheers,
