DIY Aqara Home Security System: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey everyone, just wanted to share my experience piecing together a DIY home security setup using all Aqara gear — and trust me, if I can figure it out, so can you. I’m by no means a tech genius, just a regular guy who wanted a smart way to keep an eye on things without paying monthly fees.

Here’s the setup I landed on:

  • Aqara Hub M2 as the brain
  • A mix of door/window sensors, motion sensors, and the vibration sensor for my sliding windows
  • G2H camera for live view and event footage
  • A couple of wireless mini switches as panic buttons

The cool thing is, it’s all super plug-and-play. I started with just the hub and one door sensor to get the feel, then added stuff over a couple of weeks. The app does most of the work syncing everything. I used automations like “motion sensor triggers between 11pm-6am = send alert + turn on hall light.”

Some tips based on trial and error:

  • Place your door sensors as close to the frame edge as possible for better response
  • Use the vibration sensor on windows that are easy to open or slide (I stuck it right on the glass)
  • G2H camera can double as a hub for sensors in rooms farther from the main hub
  • I added a loud third-party siren that’s triggered through Alexa routine when Aqara detects unwanted entry — works like a charm

If you’re thinking about doing this but feel overwhelmed, don’t stress. It’s honestly way friendlier than it looks. I feel way better having alerts when I’m away or sleeping. Happy to share more details if anyone’s curious.

Anyone else built out their own Aqara security setup? Would love to see how you guys configured yours.
