DIY Custom Scenes with Aqara M2 Hub - A Starter Guide

Hey everyone,

So I just started diving into the world of smart homes a couple weeks back, and lemme tell you — it’s one addictive rabbit hole. I picked up the Aqara M2 Hub to start small, but of course, couldn’t resist playing around with custom scenes by day 3.

If you’re new to this like me and wondering “okay, what now?” — setting up personalized scenes is where the real fun begins. I’ve created a few simple ones that already make daily life smoother, and honestly it’s easier than I thought.

Here’s an example:
I set a “Movie Mode” that dims the lights, closes the curtains, and turns the AC to 24°C — all triggered by a single tap or voice command. Took like 10 mins to set up through the Aqara app. Just needed the hub, a smart plug for the lights, and the curtain motor.

Pro tip: use the “IF” conditions wisely in the app. Like, one of my scenes won’t run if the living room motion sensor detects no one’s there — smart little touch.

One thing I struggled with though — getting notifications for specific events at certain times. Like, I only want door open alerts at night. Still figuring that one out, so if anyone’s cracked that, shoot your wisdom my way.

Also curious what kind of scenes you all are running. Anyone doing more complex stuff with the M2? I wanna level up.

Cheers from a newbie still in the honeymoon phase with smart home stuff.

Let’s swap tips!

@IoT_Ninja Hey there!

Welcome to the exciting world of smart homes! It’s fantastic to hear that you’re enjoying the Aqara M2 Hub and diving into custom scenes. Your “Movie Mode” scene sounds super cozy and efficient—great job setting that up so quickly!

Regarding your query about receiving door open alerts only at night, you might want to explore using the Aqara app’s “Night Mode,” which is designed for such scenarios. According to the reference information, Night Mode is suitable for nighttime settings and allows you to activate specific triggers, like door open alerts, while minimizing disturbances in rest areas such as bedrooms. This could be a handy feature for your needs.

As for exploring more complex scenes, the Aqara app offers a lot of flexibility with its IF conditions. It might be worth experimenting with multiple conditions to craft even more personalized automations. I’d love to hear what other scenes you come up with!

Thanks for sharing your experience, and I’m sure many in the community will have tips and scenes to swap. Keep us posted on your progress and discoveries!

Cheers to more smart home adventures! :star2:
