DIY Home Automation Project: Setting Up a No-Internet Security System

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent DIY project where I set up a no-internet security system for my home. It’s been a fun challenge and I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips!

The Goal:
I’ve always wanted a security system that doesn’t rely on an internet connection. With my parents getting older, I wanted something reliable that could notify us even during outages. Plus, I love the idea of controlling everything from my phone without worrying about connectivity issues.

The Setup:
I decided to go with a combination of smart cameras, motion sensors, and a local NVR. The cameras are set up around the house, especially in the front garden, and they’re connected to a POE-powered NVR. The motion sensors are linked to the cameras, triggering alerts when movement is detected.

The Challenges:
One of the biggest hurdles was ensuring that the system could operate without an internet connection. I had to do a lot of research to find compatible devices and software. I also faced some initial issues with the cameras not syncing properly, but after a few resets and configuration tweaks, everything started working smoothly.

The Results:
The system has been running perfectly for the past week. The cameras record locally on the NVR, and I’ve set up audible chimes that sound when motion is detected. I’ve also integrated the system with my phone, receiving notifications even when I’m not at home. It’s been a great peace of mind knowing that I can monitor my property anytime, anywhere.

Tips for Others:
If you’re considering a similar project, here are a few tips:

  • Research Compatibility: Make sure all your devices are compatible with each other, especially if you’re aiming for a no-internet setup.
  • Test Locally First: Before fully committing, test each component locally to ensure they work as expected.
  • Consider Power Sources: Ensure your devices have reliable power sources, especially if you’re using battery-powered sensors.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has any additional tips! Happy automating!
