DIY Lighting Projects and Smart Home Integration Tips

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a couple of my recent DIY projects and some tips I’ve picked up along the way. If you’re into lighting or smart home automation, this might be right up your alley! :star2: ### DIY LED Strip and LYRA Corner Lamp Project I’ve been diving into DIY lighting projects lately, and I’ve got to say, it’s been a blast! Today, I tackled two new DIYs using the Neon Line LED strips and the LYRA corner lamp. The first one was a finger sketch design, which turned out super cool! The second one involved using the fade setting to create a smooth transition effect. It’s amazing how a little creativity can transform a space. I hope you all are having a great Thursday—here’s to more DIY fun! :art::sparkles: ### Smart Thermostat Automation Ideas For those of you who are into smart home automation, I’ve been experimenting with my thermostats and wanted to share a few ideas. I’ve set up my system so that when SmartThings detects no one is home (based on our phones leaving the vicinity), one thermostat adjusts its temperature, and the others turn off completely. When we return, the thermostat that was left on automatically switches back to its original setting. It’s been a game-changer for energy efficiency and comfort! :running_man::male_sign::house: ### Battery Replacement Tips for Z-Wave Locks Speaking of smart home devices, I recently replaced the batteries in my Z-Wave locks and noticed that they lost connectivity to the hub. After some research, I found that this is pretty common and usually just requires a quick re-pairing process. If you’re experiencing the same issue, don’t worry—it’s easily fixable! Just make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for re-pairing. :muscle: ### Energy Meter Integration Hack Another project I’ve been working on involves replicating my solar utility meter readings within Home Assistant. I’ve been using an integration sensor to track imported and exported kWh, but I wanted to add an offset to make it more accurate. After some trial and error, I figured out how to create a template sensor that adds the necessary offset. It’s been a bit of a puzzle, but seeing it all come together has been really satisfying! :jigsaw::bulb: ### Group Automation Challenges On a slightly different note, I’ve been experimenting with group automation in Home Assistant. I’ve grouped my switches, lights, and media players by room, but I noticed that calling the homeassistant.turn_off service on a group doesn’t always turn off all included entities. Specifically, the media player seems to ignore the command. If anyone has insights into why this might be happening or how to fix it, I’d love to hear your thoughts! ### Final Thoughts Whether you’re into DIY lighting, smart home automation, or energy monitoring, there’s always something new to explore. These projects have been a great way to get creative and make my home smarter and more efficient. If you’ve got any tips, tricks, or DIY ideas of your own, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below! Let’s keep the creativity flowing! :bulb::sparkles:
