Alright, y’all. After way too many YouTube rabbit holes and “just one more sensor” purchases, I finally did it—automated nearly every room in my home using Aqara gear with Apple HomeKit. Thought I’d share what went down in case anyone’s planning the same madness (worth it, btw).
So I started small—just a motion sensor and a light. Fast forward 3 months, I’m walking into my apartment and lights come on, curtains open, thermostat adjusts… even my coffee starts brewing if I’ve had more than 3 hours sleep (no joke, tied it to my sleep tracker via HomeKit scenes).
My personal favorite? The Aqara door and window sensors. When I crack open the patio door, it cues “chill mode”: lights drop to warm tones, Sonos starts my playlist, and boom—instant vibe.
Some surprises along the way?
- The battery life on these little sensors is insane.
- HomeKit automations aren’t as limited as people say—you just gotta get creative.
- That new FP2 presence sensor is like having magic. It can tell if I’m in the bathroom vs. the kitchen and adjusts accordingly. Witchcraft.
Any fellow automation addicts here? What weird/clever automations have y’all set up? I’m hooked and always looking for inspiration.
