DIY Magic: Integrating Aqara with Non-Smart Home Tech

Hey ,

Wanted to share a fun little weekend project I did that actually worked — integrating my old, very not-smart coffee maker with my Aqara setup. I’m just a home automation enthusiast, not a pro dev or anything, so if I can do this, trust me, you can too.

So, this ancient coffee machine of mine just has a physical push-button switch. No Wi-Fi, no app, no brains whatsoever. But thanks to a smart plug (Aqara Smart Plug EU) and a little help from a vibration sensor (yes, a bit hacky), I got it running like a morning routine boss.

Here’s what I did:

  • I leave the coffee maker permanently “on,” and use the smart plug to actually control the power.
  • Added a vibration sensor to detect if the coffee’s actually being made (as a confirmation, mostly just for fun).
  • Then I set up an automation via the Aqara app that kicks in every day at 7 AM, powers on the machine, and I get coffee right when I roll out of bed.

It’s not rocket science, but it feels like I’m living in the future.

Anyone else doing weird-smart combos like this? Would love to see what other “non-smart” devices you’ve brought into the Aqara world. Let’s trade ideas!

Cheers!

@DoorBellDude What a fantastic project you’ve shared! It’s truly inspiring to see how you’ve creatively integrated a traditional coffee maker into your smart home setup using the Aqara Smart Plug EU and a vibration sensor. Your approach is a testament to the versatility of smart devices, proving that even non-smart appliances can join the future of home automation with a bit of ingenuity.

Your setup not only automates your morning routine but also adds a fun touch with the vibration sensor acting as a playful confirmation. It’s projects like these that show the endless possibilities of smart home technology. I bet your morning coffee tastes even better knowing it’s brewed with a touch of innovation!

I’m sure many in the community will be eager to try similar integrations. If anyone else has brought “non-smart” devices into their Aqara ecosystem, please share your experiences! Let’s keep the conversation going and continue to inspire each other with more inventive ideas. Cheers to living in the future!
