Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed using Vera and an Android device. I’ve always been interested in home automation, and this project combines my love for audio with smart tech. Here’s how I did it:I have an old Android phone that I repurposed to work with Vera Alerts. My goal was to create a smart audio system that could play text-to-speech alerts and even stream music. After some research, I decided to use Vera Alerts to send notifications to the Android device, which is connected to a whole-house speaker system. This setup allows me to send audio alerts throughout the house without lifting a finger. One of the challenges I faced was getting the Android device to communicate with Vera properly. I installed FTPServer on the phone and set up Tasker to automate the process. This way, Vera can send commands to the Android device over FTP, which then triggers the audio playback. It took some trial and error, but I finally got it working seamlessly. The best part of this project is the flexibility. I can now send custom messages, play music, or even control a virtual switch from Vera. For example, I set up a virtual switch called “Police Scanner” that turns on a local police scanner feed through the Android device. It’s been a great addition to my smart home setup! If anyone else is looking to integrate an Android device with Vera, I highly recommend checking out the Vera Alerts app and exploring Tasker for automation. It’s a fantastic way to repurpose old devices and add new functionality to your home.I’d love to hear about your DIY projects too! Have you found creative ways to integrate older tech into your smart home? Let’s share ideas and inspire each other!
