DIY Smart Blinds Project and Stepper Motor Selection

Hi everyone! I’m diving into a DIY project to create smart blinds for my home. It’s been an exciting journey so far, but I’ve hit a snag when it comes to selecting the right stepper motor. Let me share my experience and see if anyone can offer some guidance or tips!

I’ve measured my blinds, which are a substantial 174cm wide and 240cm tall. To get a sense of the force needed to lift them, I used a travel weight and found it to be around 1.7kg, which I’ve rounded up to 2kg for safety. The goal is to automate these blinds seamlessly, so the motor needs to handle this weight effortlessly. I’ve heard that stepper motors are ideal for this because they provide precise control, ensuring the blinds stop exactly where I want them to.

Here’s where I’m stuck: I need a stepper motor that’s cost-effective, compact, and capable of continuous rotation. I’ve looked into NEMA 14/17 motors, but they seem quite expensive, and I’m not sure if they’re the best fit for my project. I’ve also considered using gears to reduce the motor’s speed and increase torque, but I’m not entirely sure how to integrate that into my setup. Does anyone have experience with similar projects or know of a more affordable motor solution that still meets these requirements?

Another thing I’m curious about is whether there’s a way to optimize the motor’s performance without overspending on high-end components. Maybe there’s a clever workaround or a different configuration that could make this project more feasible. I’d love to hear your thoughts and any recommendations you might have!

This project is a great learning opportunity, and I’m excited to see it through. Your insights would be invaluable, so please feel free to share your expertise or any tips you’ve picked up along the way. Let’s make these smart blinds a reality!
