Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed. I’ve always been interested in home automation, and after reading some inspiring posts here, I decided to take the plunge and create my own door lock sensor. I wanted something that could detect whether my door was locked or not, and integrate it with Home Assistant.
I live in the Netherlands, and our doors have these cool ‘driepuntssluitingen’ (three-point locks). The idea was to use the movement of the lock mechanism to trigger a sensor. After some research, I found that using micro switches and a MySensors compatible node would be the perfect solution.
Here’s what I did:
-
Parts Needed: I used two combined dip switches, a MySensors compatible switch node, and some glue to secure everything. I sourced most of the parts from AliExpress and OpenHardware.io.
-
Installation: I placed the switches in the door frame, aligned with the lock mechanism. When the door is locked, the hooks move downward, triggering the switches. I connected everything to my MySensors gateway, and voilà! The sensor sends MQTT messages to Home Assistant whenever the lock state changes.
-
Testing: The system has been running for a couple of weeks now, and it’s been super reliable. I love how it integrates seamlessly with my existing setup.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has tips for improving this project. It was a great way to learn more about sensors and automation, and I’m already brainstorming my next DIY project! ![]()
