Hey everyone, I just wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed using a Wyze Plug to create a smart garage door opener. It was actually simpler than I initially thought once I got the Wyze Plug set up. Here’s what I did:
Disclaimer: I’m not responsible if you break something, so please proceed with caution.
-
Materials Needed:
- Enclosed Power Relay
- Some 18/2 Thermostat Wire
- Wyze Plug
- Ribbon and some glue/hot glue for the contact sensors
-
Setup Steps:
- Safety First: Disconnect all power to your garage door opener, preferably at the breaker box.
- Relay Connection: Connect the ends of the relay to the “Normally Open & Common” terminals. If you’re using the relay I have, it’s very clearly labeled on the bottom.
- Wire Connection: Attach the other end of the brown thermostat wire to the same connectors that your wall button is connected to. This setup essentially emulates a button press.
- Wyze Plug Setup: Set up your Wyze Plug using the Wyze App and plug the relay into it.
- Power Management: Restore power to your garage. I added a rule in the Wyze app to turn the plug off after 30 seconds to ensure it doesn’t stay on unintentionally.
-
Adding Sensors:
- To know if the garage door is open or closed, I used some ribbon and contact sensors. I attached them to the garage door and frame so they trigger when the door moves. This setup works well and gives me real-time updates.
-
Testing:
- Everything worked smoothly after setting it up. I can now control my garage door opener through the Wyze app and receive notifications if the door is left open.
This project was a great way to integrate my existing Wyze devices into my home automation setup. I hope this guide helps anyone looking to do something similar! Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement.
