DIY Smart Lighting Setup for Kids' Room

I recently embarked on a fun DIY project to install smart LED light strips under my toddler’s bed and dresser. The goal was to provide a gentle night light that turns on when he wakes up, using a motion sensor. I wanted something simple yet effective, so I went with white, dimmable LED strips.

Initially, I wasn’t sure where to start, but after some research, I decided to use a Z-Wave plug-in module to control the lights. This way, I could easily integrate them into my existing smart home setup. I found a great guide online that walked me through the wiring process, and I was pleasantly surprised that soldering wasn’t necessary!

The motion sensor was another crucial component. I mounted it under the bed, and after some tweaking, it now reliably detects movement and turns on the lights just enough for him to see without disturbing his sleep. I also set up a routine so that if the lights are on for more than 10 minutes, they dim slightly to encourage him to return to bed.

This project has been a huge success! My little one loves the soft glow, and it’s been a lifesaver for nighttime trips to the bathroom. I’d recommend this setup to any parent looking for a gentle lighting solution. Plus, it’s been a great way to experiment with smart home automation on a small scale. If anyone has tips or tricks for similar projects, I’d love to hear them!
