DIY Smart Lighting Setup with Govee and SmartThings

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed using Govee lights and SmartThings. I’ve been diving into home automation for a while now, and it’s been a blast figuring out how to make everything work together seamlessly.

The Goal

I wanted to create a smart lighting setup in my living room that would automatically adjust based on the time of day and my activities. The idea was to have warm, cozy lighting in the evenings and brighter, cooler lights during the day. Plus, I wanted to be able to control everything from my phone or voice commands.

The Setup

I went with Govee’s H6042 TV wall washer light bar for the main lighting and paired it with a Govee DreamView SyncCenter to sync the colors with my TV. Here’s how I got everything working:

  1. Govee H6042 Light Bar: Mounted above the TV, this provides even lighting and can be adjusted to match the colors on the screen.
  2. Govee DreamView SyncCenter: This little device does the magic of syncing the lights to the TV’s colors. It’s super easy to set up!
  3. SmartThings Integration: I used SmartThings to create automations that turn the lights on at sunset and adjust their brightness and color temperature throughout the day.

The Process

  1. Mounting the Lights: This was a bit tricky, but I used some command strips and a level to make sure everything was straight. I’d recommend using a stud finder for a more secure mount.
  2. Setting Up the SyncCenter: The DreamView app was a breeze to use. I just paired the SyncCenter with my TV and the lights, and it worked like magic!
  3. Creating Automations: In SmartThings, I set up routines to change the lighting based on the time of day. For example, at sunset, the lights dim and warm up, and in the morning, they brighten and cool down to help me wake up.

The Results

The setup has completely transformed my living room. The lights now automatically adjust to create the perfect ambiance for whatever I’m doing—whether I’m watching a movie, reading, or just relaxing. Plus, being able to control everything from my phone or Alexa has been a huge convenience.

Tips for Others

  • Start Small: If you’re new to DIY projects, start with a single room or even a single light fixture. It’s easier to troubleshoot and less overwhelming.
  • Read Reviews: I did a lot of research before buying my lights and accessories. Reading reviews helped me avoid some common pitfalls and find the best products.
  • Take Your Time: Don’t rush the setup. Take breaks if you get frustrated, and don’t hesitate to ask for help in forums like this one.

I hope this gives you some inspiration for your own smart lighting projects! Let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve tried something similar. Happy DIY-ing! :star2:
