Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed to turn my mailbox into a smart device. It’s been working perfectly for about a month now, and I thought I’d walk through the process in case anyone else is interested in something similar.
The Idea
I came across this plastic mailbox on Amazon with a little yellow flag that pops up when you open the door. I thought it might be possible to use that mechanism with a SmartThings sensor. The goal was to have Alexa notify me whenever the mailman arrived.
The Components
I ordered a few key items to make this happen:
- Plastic Mailbox: Amazon Link
- Z-Wave Door Sensor: Amazon Link
- Magnetic Switch: Amazon Link
- Waterproof Enclosure: Amazon Link
The Setup
- Mounting the Magnet: I bolted a block of wood to the bottom of the mailbox to mount the magnet. This ensures the magnet stays in place and aligns perfectly with the sensor arm.
- Attaching the Sensor: I used the magnet that came with the sensor and secured it to the back of the notifier arm. This way, when the flag pops up, it triggers the sensor.
- Adding a Stopper: I used a picture hanging bracket to create a stopper for the notifier arm. This ensures it resets perfectly every time, maintaining consistent contact with the magnet.
- Enclosure: The enclosure I chose has a gasket to keep water out, which was crucial since the mailbox is outdoors.
The Results
After setting everything up, I’ve been using this system for about four weeks, and it’s worked flawlessly every time! Alexa now announces when the mailman arrives, even though the mailbox is across the street. I love that the sensor is Z-Wave Plus, which means it has a longer range and better battery life.
Future Plans
I’m thinking of expanding this idea to other parts of my home. Maybe a similar setup for the trash bin or recycling bin? It’s been such a helpful addition to my smart home setup!
If anyone has questions or suggestions, I’d love to hear them. Happy tinkering! ![]()
