DIY Smart Outdoor Lighting Project Using HA and Shelly 1Mini

I’ve always been passionate about home automation and finding innovative ways to enhance my living space. That’s why I decided to embark on a DIY project to create a smart outdoor lighting system using Home Assistant (HA) and Shelly 1Mini devices. Let me share my journey and the results with you!

Project Background

I have six outdoor spotlights around my house, and I wanted them to be more than just static lights. My goal was to have them all activate simultaneously when motion was detected, without relying on a proprietary app. This would not only improve security but also add a modern touch to my home.

The Setup

I chose inexpensive LED spotlights with weatherproof housing and paired them with Shelly 1Mini relays. Each spotlight was wired to a motion sensor and the Shelly 1Mini. The hardest part was disassembling the lights to extend the wiring, but it was worth it for the functionality I desired.

Integration with Home Assistant

After setting up the hardware, I integrated the Shelly 1Minis into HA. I configured them to work in ‘Detached’ mode, meaning the physical switch wouldn’t control the light directly—everything would be managed through HA. I also enabled the motion sensor within HA, which was disabled by default.

Automation Magic

The real magic happened when I set up the automations. Now, if any motion sensor is triggered, all six spotlights come on. To add an extra layer of security, I programmed the system to turn on an indoor light and the front porch light after 20 and 30 seconds, respectively. I also receive notifications on my phone to stay informed about any activity.

Results and Satisfaction

The outcome exceeded my expectations! The spotlights provide excellent coverage, and the integration with HA allows for endless possibilities. I even have an automation that plays a friendly message through my Yamaha receiver if the alarm is triggered, adding a personal touch.

This project was a great way to utilize my existing hardware and explore the full potential of HA. It’s incredibly satisfying to see how technology can enhance everyday life.

Thank you to the Home Assistant and Shelly communities for the inspiration and support! If you’re considering a similar project, I highly recommend exploring these devices and platforms. The possibilities are truly endless!

Happy automating! :rocket:
