Hi everyone! I wanted to share an exciting DIY project I recently completed—a stealth electric projector setup that completely hides the projector when not in use. This build was inspired by my desire to create a dedicated reading, cinema, and family room without the projector dominating the space. I thought I’d document my journey in case anyone else is interested in a similar setup!
The challenge was that I didn’t have access to a roof space for a projector screen, so I had to get creative. I decided to mount the projector on top of a bookcase, hidden behind a custom-made screen that blends seamlessly with the bookshelves. The whole build was surprisingly affordable, costing no more than £400 for the bookcases, screen, and projector gear.
Here’s a quick rundown of the project:
-
Bookcase Setup: I repurposed some existing bookcases and added a custom-built shelf on top to house the projector. This not only hides the projector but also adds extra storage space.
-
Screen Design: I designed a screen that matches the bookcase aesthetics, using a lightweight material that can be easily pulled down when needed. The screen is motorized for convenience, though manual operation would also work.
-
Projector Mounting: The projector is securely mounted on the underside of the shelf, ensuring it stays hidden when not in use. I used adjustable mounts to fine-tune the projection angle.
-
Wiring and Cables: To keep everything tidy, I routed all cables through the bookcase shelves and used cable management clips to prevent any tangling or exposure.
-
Lighting Control: I integrated smart lighting into the setup to ensure the room is properly dimmed when the projector is in use, enhancing the viewing experience.
The result is a sleek, hidden projector system that doesn’t disrupt the room’s aesthetics. When the screen is up, it’s just another bookcase, but when it’s time to watch a movie, it transforms into a home theater!
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled a similar project or has tips for improving the setup. It was a fun challenge, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!
Cheers,
