DIY Wooden Cube for Hue Lighting Control - A Fun Project!

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed that combines woodworking with smart home technology. The idea was to create a wooden cube that controls my Hue bulbs using the Mood Cube SmartApp. It’s been a fantastic way to add a touch of creativity to my home automation setup! Inspiration and Design I’ve always loved the idea of having a tangible way to control my smart lights, so when I came across the Mood Cube concept, I knew I had to give it a try. The cube design allows each face to represent a different color scene, which is perfect for my Hue setup. I decided to go with a minimalist design, using colored wooden inlays held in place by magnets for a sleek look. Building the Cube The process started with sourcing the right materials. I purchased some high-quality wood blocks online and got to work. Each face of the cube was carefully crafted, with shallow holes drilled to hold the colored inlays. I used Forstner bits to ensure the holes had flat bottoms, which gave the cube a polished finish. One of the challenges was fitting the Multi Sensor inside the cube. After drilling a hole, I removed the plastic casing to make it fit snugly. A minor mishap occurred when I accidentally chipped a piece of wood while drilling, but I fixed it with some stainable wood filler. Sanding the cube down to ensure smooth edges was another crucial step, as it made the final product much more appealing. Assembly and Finishing Touches To make the cube easy to maintain, I included a bolt that allows me to disassemble it when the Multi Sensor’s batteries need replacing. I stained the wood using Minwax Special Walnut and added a clear coat of water-based polyurethane for protection. The colored inlays were held in place with mini neodymium magnets, which adds a nice interactive element. SmartApp Integration The Mood Cube SmartApp was a breeze to set up. Each face of the cube corresponds to a different color scene, and the app allows for easy customization. I’ve programmed each face to activate a specific preset, making it simple to switch between different lighting scenarios with just a tap. Final Thoughts This project was a great way to combine my love for woodworking with my interest in smart home technology. It’s not only functional but also adds a unique decorative element to my living space. I highly recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for a creative way to control your Hue bulbs! If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share more photos of the build process or provide tips for those who want to try it themselves. Cheers to DIY projects and smart home innovation! :star2:
