Dynamic Electricity Pricing Success with OpenHAB

I wanted to share my incredible experience with OpenHAB and how it helped me save significantly on my electricity bills this winter. As many of you know, Hydro-Québec introduced dynamic pricing, and I decided to take full advantage of it using my OpenHAB setup.

I installed eight Z-Wave thermostats and spent some time coding to optimize the system. The result was astonishing—I received a credit of $617, which is way above the average return of $35! The system updates thermostats, water heater, and even my electric car charger up to 20 times a day to shift consumption to more economical hours.

This experience has been a great demonstration of how smart homes can really save money. I’m now looking into ways to make this solution accessible to more people in Québec, possibly through pre-configured OpenHAB setups. If anyone has experience with this or is interested in collaborating, I’d love to hear from you!

A huge thank you to the OpenHAB community for creating such a reliable and powerful system. It’s truly impressive how it handles complex tasks without any issues. Happy 10th anniversary to OpenHAB!

Best regards,
Sébastien
