Recently, I’ve been working on optimizing my smart home setup, and I wanted to share some insights and experiences that might help others facing similar challenges. 
One of the devices I’ve been using extensively is the Zooz ZEN27 switch. While I’ve been impressed with its functionality and integration capabilities, I did run into an issue with firmware updates. The update process was extremely slow—only 3% transferred after 30 minutes for a 253 KB file. This was quite frustrating, especially since I noticed that using an older Z-Wave firmware update driver on a neighboring switch of the same model completed much faster. After some research and troubleshooting, I found that enabling debug logging provided more visibility into the process, though it didn’t fully resolve the issue. However, it did help me understand the bottlenecks better.
On a lighter note, I’ve also been exploring ways to enhance my home security and monitoring setup. I recently came across the Wyze Spotlight Cam, which caught my attention due to its excellent video quality and ease of use. While I was initially disappointed that I couldn’t download event videos directly from the Wyze web interface, I discovered a workaround by using third-party apps to capture the streams. This has been incredibly helpful for reviewing incidents, such as the unfortunate instance of a delivery vehicle damaging our driveway lights.
Another area I’ve been focusing on is device integration and automation. I’ve been experimenting with grouping devices to simplify control and enhance user experience. For instance, grouping lights and sensors in my basement has allowed me to create seamless scenes and routines. However, I encountered a limitation with the mic mode feature, which is capped at 10 devices in the general group. To overcome this, I’ve been exploring alternative grouping strategies and leveraging rules to extend functionality.
As winter approaches, I’ve also been paying close attention to my heating and energy management systems. Ensuring that my home is efficiently heated while minimizing energy waste has become a priority. I’ve been looking into advanced thermostat settings and occupancy-based automation to achieve this.
