Enhancing Nighttime Safety with Motion-Activated Bedside Lighting

Recently, I decided to take my bedroom lighting setup to the next level by integrating motion sensors and programmable LED strips. The goal was to create a practical yet stylish solution that would illuminate the space around my bed without disturbing my partner. After experimenting with various RGB strips and automation systems, I settled on a combination of HC-SR501 motion sensors and WLED, paired with a Wemos D1 Mini controller. This setup allows me to control the LED strips through Home Assistant, ensuring seamless integration with my smart home ecosystem.

The process involved a bit of trial and error, particularly with fine-tuning the motion sensors to avoid false triggers. I learned that adjusting the sensitivity and response time was crucial for reliable performance. Additionally, I discovered that running the sensors on 3.3V instead of 5V provided more stable readings. The WLED integration was a game-changer, enabling me to create dynamic lighting effects that adapt to different times of the day.

To ensure the system doesn’t interfere with our sleep, I programmed the lights to activate only during nighttime hours and to dim automatically after a few minutes of inactivity. This setup not only provides a convenient nightlight but also adds a touch of elegance to our bedroom. I’m thrilled with how this project turned out and would love to hear about others’ experiences with similar setups or any tips for further enhancements!
