Exploring Air Quality Sensors for Home Automation

I’ve recently been diving into the world of air quality monitoring and wanted to share my experiences and insights with the community. Air quality is something I’ve always taken for granted, but after reading about its impact on health, I decided it was time to take action.

I started by researching affordable, off-the-shelf solutions that could integrate seamlessly with my existing smart home setup. The JQ-200 sensor caught my eye due to its reasonable price point and the ability to flash it with Tasmota for better customization. While the initial setup was a bit tricky, especially with the Chinese cloud dependency, I managed to get it working with Home Assistant. It’s been a great addition, providing real-time data on CO2, TVOC, and PM2.5 levels.

One challenge I faced was ensuring consistent data logging and notifications. I ended up setting up IFTTT automations to alert me when certain thresholds are breached. For example, if the CO2 levels exceed 1000 ppm, I receive a push notification to open the windows or turn on the air purifier.

I’d love to hear from others who have experience with air quality sensors. What devices do you recommend? Have you faced any unique challenges or found innovative solutions? Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other create healthier living environments!

Cheers,
