For quite some time, I relied on IFTTT to connect my garage door to Alexa. It was a seamless setup—saying, ‘Alexa, close the garage door,’ would instantly trigger the opener. However, the recent announcement that Amazon is phasing out support for IFTTT’s SAY skill threw a wrench in my plans. I was determined to find a reliable alternative that wouldn’t require me to abandon the convenience I’ve grown accustomed to.
After some research, I discovered that Amazon has introduced a new Button Push applet as a replacement. While it’s a step in the right direction, it doesn’t quite offer the same level of integration I had with IFTTT. This led me on a quest to explore other possibilities within the Alexa ecosystem.
I stumbled upon the Alexa MyQ routine, which seemed promising. However, it wasn’t immediately available for my setup, which was a bit frustrating. I reached out to the community for advice, and the response was overwhelmingly helpful. Many users suggested leveraging custom routines and third-party apps that integrate with Alexa and MyQ.
One approach that worked exceptionally well was setting up a custom skill using Amazon’s Alexa Skills Kit.
