Hi everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home energy management lately, and I thought I’d share some of my experiences and insights with you. ![]()

First off, I’ve been using the Emporia Gen2 Vue devices for about a year and a half now, and they’ve been a game-changer for me. Being able to monitor 32 circuits in detail has given me a much clearer picture of my energy usage. However, I was a bit disappointed that Emporia didn’t have a local API until recently. But then I stumbled upon an amazing project where someone reverse-engineered the Vue device and flashed it with ESPHome! This has allowed me to get real-time data with updates every few seconds, which is exactly what I was hoping for. ![]()
On the dashboards front, I’ve been really impressed with the improvements in Home Assistant’s energy monitoring features. The built-in dashboards are not only visually appealing but also provide robust statistics and reporting capabilities. I’ve set up both detailed and group-level energy management systems, which has made tracking my energy consumption much more efficient. For instance, I’ve created virtual circuits by subtracting known loads from monitored circuits, which helps in avoiding double-counting and gives a more accurate picture of my energy usage. ![]()
Another area I’ve been exploring is the integration of different devices and brands. I’ve come across some fantastic solutions, like using MQTT for connecting EnOcean devices, Victron, and even plant sensors. It’s amazing how much you can automate and monitor with the right setup. ![]()
I’d love to hear from others about their approaches to energy management and device integration. What tools and techniques have you found most effective? Any tips or tricks you’d like to share? Let’s keep the conversation going! ![]()
