Exploring IKEA Button Compatibility and Smart Lighting Solutions

I’ve been diving into the world of IKEA smart home devices lately, particularly their modern button range. I’ve successfully created drivers for the RODRET, SOMRIG, and SYMFONISK Gen 2 buttons, which weren’t supported out of the box. These buttons are fantastic for customizing actions around the house, like controlling lights or adjusting the thermostat with just a press or hold. The extended support for TRADFRI on/off and 5-button remotes has been a huge plus, allowing me to integrate even more devices into my smart home setup.

One thing I’ve noticed is that newer buttons made after May 2024 might have firmware issues, so I recommend sticking with older models if possible. The buttons can be a bit tricky to pair, but I’ve found that deleting the device and trying again usually works. If the hub insists on using Zigbee Thing, waiting a few minutes can help it recognize the custom driver.

For lighting, I’ve been exploring budget-friendly alternatives to Philips Hue. The SYMFONISK Gen 2 remote has been a great addition for controlling lights, and I’ve been impressed by its multi-tap functionality, which allows for more nuanced control. However, I’ve had mixed luck with some ZHA-based bulbs, so I’m still on the hunt for reliable, cost-effective options.

If anyone has tips on integrating other devices or troubleshooting pairing issues, I’d love to hear them! The community here has been invaluable, and I’m excited to keep learning and improving my setup.
