Exploring MQTT Sensor Calculations and Automation Tips

I’ve been diving into Home Assistant lately and wanted to share my journey with the community. I recently set up a LilyGo device running MQTT, which connects to a 433MHz oil tank sensor. While the sensor itself works perfectly, I’ve been trying to take it a step further by adding some calculations to make the data more meaningful.

My goal is to calculate the oil depth and remaining volume, and eventually display this in a neat animated fluid level card. Here’s where I’m stuck: I can’t seem to find the right place in the YAML files to add these calculations. My device is named ‘Oil Tank Gauge’ with three sensors: Alarm, Depth, and RSSI. I was hoping to add a couple more sensors for oil depth (120cm - Depth) and oil remaining (10 liters per cm).

Would love to hear if anyone has experience with similar setups or knows where I should look in the configuration files. Also, any tips on how to track daily usage trends or predict how many days of oil I have left would be super helpful!

On a lighter note, I’ve also been exploring the HomePod mini as a potential replacement for my IKEA Dirigera setup. While the Dirigera works well, I’m curious if the HomePod can handle automations like turning off lights when I leave. If anyone has tried this setup, I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Finally, I’m always on the lookout for creative ways to visualize data in Home Assistant. If anyone has tips on using custom cards or templates effectively, please share! The community here is amazing, and I’m grateful for all the help and inspiration. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
