Exploring OpenTherm Integration for HVAC Control

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and one of my latest projects has been integrating my HVAC system with openHAB. The goal is to control my Hoval TopGas boiler and room thermostats using OpenTherm (OT) technology. While I’ve made some progress, I’m still navigating through the complexities of OT gateways and bindings.

The Hoval Boiler has an OpenTherm interface, which I plan to connect to an OT-KNX gateway. From there, I’ll use the KNX binding in openHAB to manage the boiler. However, I’m curious if there’s a more straightforward way to achieve this without relying on KNX. I’ve come across some alternative solutions, like using an OT gateway paired with MQTT, but I’m not sure if that’s the best approach.

Another challenge I’ve encountered is configuring the Siemens RDF-110 thermostats. They don’t integrate directly with the Hoval system, so I’m exploring ways to bridge them into the openHAB ecosystem. I’d love to hear if anyone has successfully connected similar thermostats or has recommendations for compatible hardware.

For those interested in OT integration, I’d recommend starting with a thorough understanding of your boiler’s capabilities and researching compatible gateways. It’s also worth checking if there are any existing openHAB bindings or community-developed solutions that can simplify the process.

I’ll keep updating as I make progress and hopefully share a full write-up once the project is complete. If anyone has tips, resources, or success stories, I’d be thrilled to hear them!
