As someone who values both convenience and privacy, I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect smart lighting setup. After some research and experimentation, I’d like to share my findings and experiences with the community.
The Challenge
I’ve been using Home Assistant (HA) with a local Raspberry Pi setup, avoiding cloud-based services like Google Home or Alexa. This means I need bulbs that work seamlessly with HA without relying on external cloud platforms. I stumbled upon the Blitzwolf BW-LT29, which initially seemed promising. However, the app’s request for my SSID, password, and location raised privacy concerns. Unfortunately, attempts to flash it with ESPHome didn’t work out, so I had to set it aside.
The Search Continues
I’ve been looking for bulbs that are privacy-friendly, high-quality (>95 CRI), and HA-compatible. Ideally, they’d support protocols like MQTT or IP/JSON for better integration. After some digging, I found a few options worth exploring:

MQTT-Compatible Bulbs: If anyone has experience with bulbs that natively support MQTT, I’d love to hear about them. This would streamline integration with HA without extra steps.

Local Network Solutions: Sticking to devices that operate entirely on my local network is a priority. This minimizes data exposure and keeps everything under my control.

High CRI Options: Ensuring good color rendering is essential, especially for ambient lighting. I’d appreciate recommendations on bulbs that meet this criterion without compromising on smart features.
My Current Setup
For now, I’ve reverted to a mix of traditional bulbs and a few smart ones that meet my privacy standards. While it’s functional, I’m eager to find a more integrated solution that aligns with my values.
