As I continue my journey into the world of smart home automation, I’ve been exploring various ways to integrate different devices and optimize my setup. One area that has recently caught my attention is the integration of smart cameras and custom automation rules.
I recently came across the Vocolinc VC1 Opto Smart Indoor Camera and was intrigued by its HomeKit compatibility and features like two-way audio and night vision. While I’m not yet ready to purchase, it’s great to see more options in the market, especially with HomeKit Secure Video support. However, I’m a bit hesitant about the lack of local storage via an SD card, which some other cameras offer.
On the automation front, I’ve been working on setting up a system to monitor my chickens’ behavior. I had a setup on SmartThings that turned on a light 30 minutes before sunset, but only if sunset was before 8 PM. Moving this to Home Assistant has been a bit of a challenge, as the sun condition doesn’t support time-based offsets. I’ve been experimenting with workarounds using virtual dimmers and time-based triggers, but it’s definitely a learning curve.
Another interesting project I’ve been tinkering with is creating a custom sensor for license plate checks using the RDW integration. It would be fantastic if this could be expanded to include the license plate itself as a sensor attribute, allowing for more dynamic automations, especially with multiple vehicles.
I’d love to hear from others who have successfully integrated cameras and custom sensors into their setups. Any tips or tricks for optimizing these integrations would be greatly appreciated! ![]()
