Exploring Smart Home Automation for a New House

As I embark on building my new home, I’m thrilled to dive into the world of smart home automation. It’s an exciting journey filled with endless possibilities, but also a bit overwhelming given the sheer amount of information out there. I’ve been doing a lot of research, watching YouTube tutorials, and reading forums to get a better grasp of what’s out there.

One of the key decisions I’ve made is choosing the HE (Hubitat) ecosystem, especially after the impressive Leap Day sale. It feels like a solid foundation to build upon. I’ve also picked up a few devices to start with—some Yeelight bulbs and Amazon plugs. Now, I’m trying to wrap my head around setting up Zigbee and Z-Wave mesh networks. I’ve read through the Hubitat documentation, which is quite detailed, but I’m still a bit confused about whether it’s necessary to set up both Zigbee and Z-Wave networks. What’s the advantage of having both?

I’m also curious about how WiFi devices fit into the automation picture. Do they play a significant role, or are they more of a supplementary addition? And what about device integration? I’ve heard about using bulbs as repeaters, but I’m not entirely sure how that works or if it’s reliable.

Another thing I’m exploring is budget-friendly devices, like some cheap Aqara sensors I came across. However, I’m hesitant because they’re not officially supported. I’ve read that installing third-party drivers can be tricky, and I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort. Should I invest in officially supported hardware instead?

Currently, I’m still living in an apartment and won’t move into my new house for a couple of months. I’m wondering if it’s worth setting up some devices now and then moving them, or if I should wait until I’m in my new space. The mesh network setup is a big consideration here.

Overall, I’m excited to start experimenting and seeing how all these pieces come together. I’m looking forward to learning more and hopefully creating a seamless smart home experience. If anyone has tips or recommendations, I’d love to hear them!
