As a new member of the smart home community, I wanted to share my recent experience with setting up a simple yet effective automation system. My goal was to create a visual indicator for open doors, inspired by the need for better airflow and outdoor access in our home.
I started by installing some contact sensors on our front door, back door, and garage doors. To add a visual touch, I chose an IKEA Tradfri RGB bulb for its color-changing capabilities. The idea was to have the bulb display a specific color when any door is open, and revert to a neutral white light when all are closed.
While the setup itself was straightforward, I encountered a minor issue with the rule engine. Initially, the system didn’t consistently detect all door states, especially after a reboot. After some research and tweaking, I realized the problem was with the rule’s conditional logic. I had to ensure that each door’s state was explicitly checked before triggering the color change.
This project has been a great learning experience, and I’m excited to explore more complex automations in the future. I’d love to hear from others who have tackled similar projects or have tips for improving my setup!
Here’s a quick overview of the components I used:
- Sensors: Thirdreality contact sensors
- Lighting: IKEA Tradfri RGB bulb
- Automation: Hubitat Rule Machine
If anyone has suggestions or alternative approaches, I’d be happy to discuss further! ![]()
