Exploring Smart Home Automation: My Journey with HB F&L and Shelly Dimmer 2

Hello everyone! I wanted to share my recent experiences with integrating some smart home devices, specifically the HB Fan & Light (F&L) controller and the Shelly Dimmer 2. It’s been an exciting journey with a few bumps along the way, but I’ve learned a lot and thought I’d pass on some tips and tricks.

HB Fan & Light Controller Installation

I recently installed the HB F&L controller, and it’s been a great addition to my setup. The installation wasn’t entirely smooth, but it was definitely worth the effort. The challenge came with an older fan model that didn’t have a built-in spot for the controller module. After some creative problem-solving, I used a radiator clamp to secure the controller to the fan mount. It’s a bit of a hack, but it works perfectly!

Using the SmartThings app, I was able to pair the controller without any issues. The fan now integrates seamlessly with my smart home setup, responding to voice commands, the remote, and even through ActionTiles. The only minor drawback is that it doesn’t support dimming the lights, but given the fan’s original limitations, I’m still very happy with the result. A huge shoutout to KOF for developing such excellent device handlers!

Shelly Dimmer 2: A Little Mishap

Speaking of creative solutions, I had a bit of a scare with my Shelly Dimmer 2. I accidentally plugged in my iron into an outlet controlled by the dimmer, and now the dimmer doesn’t control the light anymore. The light stays on regardless of the switch or app commands. I’m hoping it’s just a fuse issue and not a complete write-off. I’ll be checking if there’s a way to reset or replace any components to get it working again.

Time Pattern Trigger Puzzle

On another note, I’ve been experimenting with time pattern triggers in Home Assistant. I wanted to set up a check for my window opening every 10 minutes. After some trial and error, I realized that the time pattern wasn’t firing as expected. It only triggered once at 7:30 AM. I’m still figuring out the best way to structure the trigger so it works consistently throughout the day. If anyone has tips or solutions, I’d love to hear them!

Wind Speed Automation

Lastly, I’ve been working on an automation to control an outdoor switch based on wind speed. The goal is to turn the switch on only if the wind is below 4 MPH. I’ve set up a time-based trigger at 5 PM and used a condition to check the weather data. However, it doesn’t seem to be working as intended. I’m curious if others have successfully integrated weather data into their automations and how they approached it.

Final Thoughts

Smart home automation is such a rewarding space to explore, even with the occasional hiccup. Each project teaches me something new and pushes me to think outside the box. I’d love to hear about your experiences, challenges, and successes in the comments below! Let’s keep the learning and sharing going!
