Exploring Smart Home Automation: My Journey with Sonos and iPad Integration

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent journey with smart home automation and how I’ve been experimenting with integrating my Sonos system with my iPad. It’s been a fascinating process, and I’d love to hear others’ experiences and tips!

So, here’s the setup: My girlfriend and I both love using technology to enhance our daily routines. She occasionally uses her iPad to watch TV in bed, and I wanted to create a seamless automation where Sonos plays for half an hour when we go to bed but stops if she unlocks the tablet. Sounds simple enough, right?

I tried using an iOS automation with the trigger “When app is started” to start a flow. The idea was that when the iPad app starts, it triggers a flow on Homey to play music. However, since the app doesn’t close completely every time, the automation didn’t work as intended. It kept playing even after she wanted it to stop. I’ve heard that some users have found workarounds using Siri or Google Home, but I haven’t had much luck yet.

This got me thinking about the broader possibilities of integrating different devices. For example, I’ve seen some users create elaborate scenes where lights dim and music starts based on motion sensors or time of day. It’s amazing how these small automations can really enhance comfort and convenience.

Another thing I’ve been exploring is optimizing device status updates. I’ve noticed that sometimes my Yale lock doesn’t reflect its actual state in the Hubitat UI, which can be confusing. I came across a custom app that automatically refreshes selected devices at configurable intervals, which seems like a solid solution. It skips devices with low battery to conserve power, which is a thoughtful feature.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled similar challenges or has tips for making these automations more reliable. Whether it’s integrating different brands, troubleshooting connectivity issues, or just sharing your favorite automations, I’m all ears!

On a lighter note, I’ve also been impressed by how the community comes together to share successes and problem-solve. It’s inspiring to see so many creative solutions and helpful tips. I hope to contribute more as I continue my smart home journey.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

Best,
