Exploring Smart Home Automation: Successes and Questions

Hello fellow smart home enthusiasts! I’ve been on a wonderful journey exploring the world of smart home automation, and I’d love to share some of my experiences and ask for your insights. :rocket:

First, I’d like to highlight a success story. I recently set up a system that automatically adjusts my home’s lighting based on sunrise and sunset times. Using the Astro integration in OpenHAB, I’ve programmed my lights to turn on 20 minutes before sunset and off at 10 PM. It’s been working beautifully, and it’s incredibly satisfying to come home to a warm, welcoming environment without lifting a finger. :sunrise::sparkles:

However, I’m now looking to expand my setup and have a few questions I’d love to discuss with the community:

  1. Camera Connectivity: I’ve been using Wyze cameras for monitoring, but I’ve noticed occasional connectivity issues. Specifically, I’m curious about how others handle power cycling with these devices. Does repeatedly turning them on and off affect their hardware or firmware? I’d appreciate any technical insights or experiences you’ve had with similar setups. :package::electric_plug:

  2. Remote Watering System: I’m planning to create a system for remote flower watering and monitoring humidity and temperature. I’d love to understand the architecture needed for this project. Are there specific sensors or modules you’d recommend for reliable performance? :ear_of_rice::sweat_drops:

  3. Lighting Automation: I’m also exploring the possibility of integrating a smart plug with energy metering into my system. I’d love to hear about any experiences with Homey or other platforms that support native energy metering for thread-based plugs. Any recommendations or pitfalls to avoid? :bulb::zap:

I’m truly grateful for the wisdom and experiences shared in this community. Your insights have been invaluable, and I’m excited to contribute and learn more!

Looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations! :brain::bulb:
