Exploring Smart Home Automation with Motion Sensors

Hi everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I’m absolutely thrilled with how much I’ve been able to achieve so far. I wanted to share my experience and see if anyone has similar setups or tips to share.

I’ve been using motion sensors extensively in my home, particularly in the bathroom. The setup involves two motion sensors: one under the vanity to detect foot traffic and another in the shower area to detect when someone is taking a shower. Using Room Lighting, I’ve managed to automate the vanity lights to turn on when motion is detected and turn off after a period of inactivity. This has been incredibly convenient and has reduced the hassle of manually controlling the lights.

However, I’ve been curious about expanding this setup to include the bathroom fan. Currently, I’m using the Rule Machine to trigger the fan when the shower motion sensor is activated. I’m wondering if there’s a way to achieve this solely through Room Lighting without relying on additional automation tools. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Another challenge I’ve encountered is ensuring consistent performance across different networks. I’m running HomeAssistant on a Raspberry Pi with Docker, and I’ve noticed that the HomeKit integration is only accessible on the WiFi network, not the Ethernet network. This has been a bit of a hurdle, especially when I need to troubleshoot or access HomeKit from devices on the Ethernet network. I’d love to hear if anyone has found a workaround or solution for this issue.

Lastly, I’ve been exploring the integration of different smart home devices and brands. It’s fascinating to see how various ecosystems can work together, but it also presents its own set of challenges. I’d love to hear about others’ experiences in integrating multiple brands and how they’ve managed to create a seamless smart home environment.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences! It’s amazing to be part of such a supportive and innovative community.
