Hello everyone, I’m thrilled to join this community and share my journey into the world of smart home automation. I’ve recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 5 and am eager to set up a robust system that integrates various smart devices. While I have some basic knowledge, I’m still exploring the best ways to configure everything, and I’d love to hear your experiences and tips!
My Setup and Goals:
I currently have a few Wi-Fi smart plugs that I’ve been using with the Smart Life app, but I want to move to a more comprehensive system. My main objectives are to create a reliable smart home hub using Raspberry Pi 5, integrate multiple wireless standards, and ensure seamless coverage throughout my 150m² apartment, including the garage on the opposite side of the house.
Key Requirements:
- Raspberry Pi 5 as the Central Hub: I plan to run Home Assistant on it. I’m looking for recommendations on cases that can accommodate both the Pi5 and a SATA SSD for additional storage.
- Wireless Standards: I’m torn between ZigBee and Wi-Fi. I have some ZigBee door and window sensors, but I’m open to other protocols. Should I stick with one protocol or mix multiple?
- Coverage and Reliability: Ensuring consistent connectivity throughout my home, especially in the garage, is crucial. Any tips on achieving this?
Planned Features:
- Lighting Control: I want to replace my traditional switches with smart in-wall modules for better control and energy efficiency.
- Electric Roller Shutters: Retrofitting my manual roller shutters with motors is a priority. I’m seeking advice on the best motors and how to integrate them into my smart home system.
Questions and Requests:- Wireless Protocols: What wireless standards do you recommend for a seamless and reliable setup?
- Cases for Raspberry Pi 5: Any suggestions for durable and stylish cases that can house the Pi5 and a SATA SSD?
- Integration Tips: How have others successfully integrated multiple devices and protocols into their systems?
I’m also curious about your experiences with specific devices or setups that have worked exceptionally well. Whether it’s about troubleshooting, design choices, or just sharing the joy of a well-functioning smart home, I’m all ears!
Thank you in advance for your insights and recommendations. I’m excited to learn from your experiences and hopefully contribute to this amazing community as I grow in my smart home journey. Let’s make this space even more vibrant with shared knowledge and inspiration!
