Exploring Smart Home Integration with Zigbee and Matter

Hi all, I’m relatively new to the world of home automation and have been diving into the possibilities of Zigbee, Matter, and Thread. After setting up my basic smart home setup, I’ve realized that relying solely on Wi-Fi devices might not be the best long-term solution. This has led me to explore Zigbee, Matter, and Thread as more reliable alternatives for local control and device communication.

I recently purchased a Sonoff dongle and was planning to use Zigbee light bulbs as repeaters throughout my house. However, I’ve encountered some challenges in finding competitively priced Zigbee repeater devices locally in New Zealand. Most options seem to be either Hue bulbs or wall sockets, which are either too expensive or not readily available in stores like Mitre 10.

This has made me consider the Matter and Thread protocols more seriously. I have a Tapo hub that I’ve recently integrated with Matter, but I’m still unclear on how to connect non-Tapo devices like Nanoleaf Matter bulbs directly to my home automation system. Is there a way to integrate these devices seamlessly, or do I need additional hardware or software to bridge the gap?

I’d appreciate any advice or experiences others have had with these protocols, especially in terms of local control and device compatibility. It would be great to hear from those who’ve successfully integrated Matter and Thread devices into their smart homes!

Cheers,
