Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with setting up smart lighting automation in my home. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips!
I’ve been experimenting with creating a system where my lights turn on randomly when we’re away, to deter potential intruders. The idea is to simulate someone being home by having lights come on at irregular intervals. However, getting the automation just right has been a bit tricky. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Timing the Automation: I set the rule to run between sunset and 10 PM. This way, the lights activate during the evening when it’s darker outside.
- Random Delays: I added a random delay of 0 to 30 minutes after the trigger is activated. This ensures the lights don’t follow a predictable pattern.
- Random On/Off Times: Once the delay is over, the lights turn on for a random duration between 0 and 30 minutes before turning off again.
- Looping the Rule: If it’s still within the sunset to 10 PM window, the rule repeats, creating a cycle of lights coming on and off throughout the evening.
While the concept seems straightforward, getting the logic right has been a bit of a puzzle. I’ve spent hours tweaking the settings and testing different scenarios. It’s been frustrating at times, but also really rewarding when things start to work!
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled a similar project. What tips or tricks do you have for creating effective random lighting automation? Have you found any particular settings or apps that make this process easier?
Another thing I’m curious about is how others handle the reliability of these systems. Have you ever had a situation where the lights didn’t activate when they were supposed to? How did you troubleshoot that?
This project has definitely sparked my interest in diving deeper into smart home automation. It’s amazing how a little creativity and some trial and error can lead to such cool results!
Looking forward to your insights and experiences. Let’s keep the ideas flowing! ![]()
