Exploring Smart Lighting Control with Hubitat

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting lately, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and insights with you all. I’ve been using Hubitat to control my ceiling fans and light fixtures, and it’s been a fantastic journey so far. However, I’ve encountered a few bumps along the way that I’d love to discuss and see if others have similar experiences or solutions.

One of the main things I’ve been exploring is grouping multiple light fixtures together for easier control. I’ve created virtual devices for each group, which works well in theory. However, when I try to use voice commands with Google Home, I sometimes get an error message saying the group lights couldn’t be reached, even though the command still executes. It’s a bit confusing and a little frustrating, but I’m determined to figure it out!

I’ve been wondering if there’s a way to make one bulb act as the ‘leader’ for the others, so that any changes to the leader automatically apply to the rest of the group. This would solve the issue I’m having with Google Home and make controlling my lights much smoother. I’ve heard about the Rule Machine in Hubitat, and I’m curious if that could be the solution. Maybe I can set up a rule where Bulb 2 and 3 follow whatever action Bulb 1 takes? That would be perfect!

Another thought I’ve had is whether I need to register each bulb individually with Google Home instead of grouping them. While that might resolve the error message issue, it would also mean more work setting up each bulb separately. I’m not sure if it’s worth the trade-off, but it’s definitely something to consider.

I’d love to hear from others who have experience with grouping lights or using the Rule Machine for similar purposes. Have you encountered similar issues? How did you solve them? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

On a lighter note, I’ve been really impressed with how customizable Hubitat is. It’s amazing how much control you can have over your lighting setup, and it’s made my home feel so much more connected and modern. I’m excited to continue exploring all the possibilities and hopefully find a seamless solution for my group lighting controls.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!
