Hi everyone,
I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting lately, and I wanted to share my experiences and some questions I have. I’ve been using a mix of Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, and it’s been quite the journey!
First, I’d like to talk about my setup. I have a few Philips Hue bulbs and some IKEA Tradfri lights, both of which use Zigbee. I’ve also integrated a couple of Z-Wave switches from Leviton. The combination has been great, but I’ve encountered a few hiccups along the way.
One thing I’ve noticed is that while Zigbee devices are generally reliable, there seems to be a bit of inconsistency when it comes to device discovery. I’ve had some bulbs that just wouldn’t show up in my system until I restarted the hub. I’m curious if others have experienced this and if there are any best practices for ensuring smooth discovery.
On the Z-Wave side, I’ve been impressed with the reliability of the switches. They’ve been rock-solid, and I love how they integrate seamlessly with my existing setup. However, I’ve heard that Zigbee offers better range and mesh capabilities. I’m wondering if anyone has tips on optimizing Zigbee networks for larger homes or multi-story setups.
Another area I’m exploring is automation. I’ve set up some basic routines, like turning on lights when I enter a room or dimming them at night. I’d love to take this a step further by integrating motion sensors and maybe even some smart plugs for controlling non-smart lighting. Does anyone have experience with this kind of setup and any advice on the best devices to use?
I also wanted to touch on the topic of energy efficiency. I’ve been tracking my lighting usage and would love to get more detailed insights. Are there any recommended tools or integrations within the OpenHAB ecosystem that can provide comprehensive energy monitoring for smart lights?
Lastly, I’m always on the lookout for new devices to try out. If anyone has any standout Zigbee or Z-Wave lighting devices they’d recommend, I’d love to hear about them!
Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!
Best,
