Exploring Smart Lighting Solutions: A Journey with Hue and IKEA

Recently, I decided to dive into the world of smart lighting, and what an exciting journey it has been! I’ve been experimenting with a mix of Philips Hue, IKEA, Eria Adurolight, and Ledvance bulbs, all connected through Zigbee. The goal was to create a seamless lighting experience using my Ikea Styrbar and LK Wiser controllers. While the setup has been mostly smooth, there have been a few hurdles that I thought I’d share with the community.

Initially, I configured each bulb with its respective driver—Hue Ambience, Generic Zigbee CT Bulb for IKEA, and Advanced Zigbee CT bulb for Eria and Ledvance. The Hue bulbs have been a standout with their quick response times and accurate color rendering. However, the IKEA bulbs presented some challenges. They were slow to react, often requiring a delay before dimming commands would take effect. This led to some creative solutions, like using virtual switches and delays to improve responsiveness.

The Adurolight and Ledvance bulbs, while functional, have been less reliable. They occasionally turn on autonomously after being switched off, which has been a bit frustrating. I’ve mitigated this by integrating virtual switches, but it’s something I’d like to explore further to find a more permanent fix.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been the ability to customize the lighting experience. For instance, setting the Hue bulbs to follow a virtual switch allows for much smoother toggling—up to three times per second. It’s a small tweak, but it makes a significant difference in usability.

I’d love to hear from others who have tackled similar challenges. Have you found innovative ways to optimize bulb responsiveness or integrate virtual switches effectively? I’m particularly curious about experiences with other brands or setups that might offer smoother performance.

In conclusion, while this project has had its share of bumps, it’s been an invaluable learning experience. The satisfaction of seeing everything come together, even with the occasional workaround, is immense. I’m excited to continue refining my setup and discovering new ways to enhance my smart lighting system.
