Exploring Smart Lock Auto-Unlock Functionality

I’ve been really impressed with the convenience of smart locks, especially the ability to lock and unlock doors with my phone. However, I’m curious about taking this a step further—specifically, the idea of having my door automatically unlock as I approach it. I’ve seen this feature in some high-end systems, and I wonder how feasible it is to implement with my current setup.

I currently have Z-Wave door locks installed on all four entry doors, and they work seamlessly with my existing smart home ecosystem. I’ve set up contact sensors to automatically lock the doors when they close, which has been a huge improvement in security and convenience. Now, I’m looking to enhance this further by enabling the door to unlock automatically when I—or my wife—get close to it.

The concept I’m exploring is similar to how automatic doors work in grocery stores. Imagine walking up to your front door while carrying groceries, and the door automatically unlocks without needing to fumble with your phone or keys. This would be especially handy in busy moments or when my hands are full.

I’ve considered using motion sensors, but they don’t seem to be a viable solution due to security concerns. Placing a motion sensor outside the door could potentially be triggered by passersby, which isn’t ideal. Similarly, a Z-Wave push button isn’t practical since it would require manual interaction, defeating the purpose of the auto-unlock feature.

My current thought is to use my mobile phone as a proximity sensor. If I can configure the system to detect when my phone is within a certain range of the door, it could trigger the auto-unlock function. This approach seems logical since I always have my phone with me. Alternatively, using a physical sensor that both my wife and I can carry in our pockets might be another solution.

I’d love to hear from others who have successfully implemented similar systems. What hardware or software solutions did you use? Are there any potential pitfalls or security concerns I should be aware of? I’m also curious about the reliability of such a system—would it consistently detect my proximity without false triggers?

This feature has the potential to take my smart home experience to the next level, and I’m eager to explore the possibilities further. If anyone has insights, tips, or recommendations, I’d be grateful for your input!
