I recently stumbled upon an intriguing discovery while exploring the capabilities of smart home apps—specifically, the SmartLife app’s ability to function as a Matter controller. At first, I was under the impression that Matter controller apps were still in their infancy, but a user in a recent forum post clarified that the Android version of SmartLife indeed serves this purpose. This revelation piqued my curiosity, and I decided to test it out myself.
I began by sharing a Matter light with the SmartLife app, even opting to do so as a guest without creating an account. To my astonishment, the light responded seamlessly to controls from the app. To ensure there were no external factors at play, I unplugged my primary Matter hub, yet the app continued to function without any hiccups. This experiment not only confirmed the app’s capabilities but also opened my eyes to potential use cases, such as using a smartphone or tablet as a local control hub, especially in scenarios where cloud-based apps might fail.
However, I also considered the potential downsides. Running a Matter controller on a phone could drain the battery and increase data usage, especially with frequent transitions or chatty bulbs. After weighing the pros and cons, I decided to remove the light from the app, prioritizing my phone’s performance over this feature. Nonetheless, this experience underscored the versatility of Matter and the innovative ways it can be integrated into our smart homes.
This journey has left me intrigued about the future of Matter and how it might evolve to offer even more flexibility and control. Whether it’s enabling local control in remote locations or integrating with other ecosystems, the possibilities seem endless. I’m excited to see how the community continues to explore and innovate with Matter technology!
