Exploring SmartThings Hub and Zigbee Device Firmware Updates

Hello everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation and wanted to share some of my experiences and questions regarding the SmartThings Hub and Zigbee devices. I hope this thread can help others who are exploring similar setups!

First, I recently set up a SmartThings Hub connected to my Apple Home via Homebridge on a Raspberry Pi. It’s been a great experience so far, but I’ve encountered an interesting issue. Any iOS automation or shortcut that involves turning off a device connected to HomeKit via Homebridge doesn’t work. Interestingly, turning devices on works perfectly, but turning them off always fails. Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve noticed that I can get devices to turn off by mirroring another device’s state that’s directly connected to Apple Home, but it’s not a seamless solution. I’d love to hear if there’s a more straightforward fix!

Another topic I’ve been curious about is Zigbee devices and firmware updates. I’ve read that Zigbee devices generally don’t receive firmware updates through third-party hubs like Homey, but I’m wondering if this changes if you use the manufacturer’s hub. For instance, if I have an IKEA or Philips hub, would my devices be updated automatically? Or is it a common issue that Zigbee devices are stuck with their factory firmware? This is something I’d like to understand better, especially as I’m considering adding more Zigbee devices to my setup.

Lastly, I’ve been experimenting with creating dashboards and automations using Hubitat. One thing I’m particularly excited about is integrating my Liftmaster/MyQ garage door opener. While I can control it directly through the MyQ app and Hubitat, I’m trying to set up a dashboard tile to open and close the garage door. The tile works perfectly for opening, but closing it has been a bit tricky. The tile changes state as expected, but the door doesn’t always close. I’ve found that the issue might be related to how the tile is configured, but I’m not entirely sure. If anyone has tips or tricks for setting up reliable dashboard controls, I’d be grateful to hear them!

This journey into smart home automation has been both challenging and rewarding. I’m excited to continue learning and improving my setup, and I hope this thread can contribute to the community’s knowledge and experiences. Thanks in advance for any insights or advice you can share!
