As a long-time user of SmartThings, I’ve witnessed incredible advancements that have brought my smart home visions to life. However, recent challenges have made me question the future of this platform. The transition to the new SmartThings app has been rocky, with half of my devices mysteriously disappearing despite showing up in the IDE and Classic apps. This inconsistency is frustrating, especially when my automations still function seamlessly behind the scenes. I’ve reached out to support, but troubleshooting steps remain elusive.
The delay in local processing and the reliance on the cloud have become significant pain points. For instance, waiting for lights to turn on as I enter a room feels like an eternity. The promise of local control, which is crucial for reliability, remains unfulfilled. While I’ve explored alternatives like Hubitat, the extensive ecosystem and integrations I’ve built over the years are hard to leave behind.
I’m hopeful that SmartThings will address these issues and continue to innovate. Until then, I’ll remain patient, leveraging the strengths of the platform while seeking workarounds for its shortcomings. If anyone has tips or solutions for the app issues or cloud dependency, I’d love to hear them!
