Exploring the Benefits of Matter Switches in My Smart Home

As I continue my journey into the world of smart home technology, I’ve been particularly excited about the potential of Matter-enabled devices. Recently, I installed some Tapo S515 three-way Matter-capable switches, and while the installation process was smooth, I encountered some unexpected behavior that I wanted to share and learn more about from the community. The installation itself was straightforward—I followed the instructions in the Tapo app, added them to Alexa as Matter devices, and then integrated them into Hubitat. Control via Hubitat worked without issues, but I noticed a lot of extraneous events coming from two of the three switches. Every few seconds, I’d get a physical on or off event in Hubitat, even though neither switch had been touched. The third switch didn’t exhibit this behavior. After some troubleshooting, I realized the difference might be in how the switches were wired. For the two that produced extra events, the switches were wired as Load->Switch->Light->Switch, while the third was wired differently: Load->Light->Switch->Switch. I tried swapping the switches, and the behavior followed the switch that was previously causing issues. This led me to believe the wiring configuration might play a role.I even considered wiring one of the S515s on a different circuit as a single-pole switch, and while I didn’t see the constant events, I did occasionally see extra physical events whenever the switch was triggered digitally. It’s been a bit of a puzzle, but I’m hopeful that with some more experimentation and perhaps some community insights, I can find a solution. This experience has been a great learning opportunity, and I’m grateful for the support and knowledge-sharing within this community. If anyone has encountered similar behavior or has tips on how to mitigate these extraneous events, I’d love to hear about it! The potential of Matter devices is huge, and I’m excited to continue exploring how they can enhance my smart home setup.
